INAUGURATION OF TECHNICAL COMMITTEE ON
“SYSTEM OF EDUCATION AND PRACTICE IN NURSING”.
In line with the leadership’s vision to reposition Nursing
profession through its current reforms in collaboration with the Nursing and
Midwifery Council of Nigeria, the President inaugurated a technical
committee made up of seasoned academia from the various departments of
Nursing and Directors of Nursing across the country on the 30th January 2008
at the Dayspring Hotel, Abuja.
The Association has observed that the issues of qualification
seem to have devalued the Professional status of Nursing Services. The
qualifications that have dominated the discussions are:-
-
The Registered
Nurse/Midwife (RN/RM)
-
University
Degree in Nursing (B.sc/BSNC Nursing)
NANNM, as a member of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of
Nigeria (NMCN) knows that it is only the RN/RM qualification that is
approved to practice Nursing. However, as a professional Association, NANNM
is concerned about the conflict that the issue of qualification in the
Nursing Profession is currently generating.
Against the backdrop of this, the Association has decided to
focus the attention of all stakeholders on the curricular for the training
and development of Nurses in Nigeria, because it is the content of the
curriculum and the quality of knowledge dispensers that will determine the
quality of the end-products.
This therefore explains why the President inaugurated this
all important technical committee to brainstorm and come up with the way
forward. The Committee has the following terms of reference:-
-
To assess the
system of Nursing Education.
-
To assess the
system of Nursing Practice.
-
To examine the
effect of Nursing Education on Practice.
-
To consider and
recommend strategies to be adopted to improve the system of education and
practice.
After the committee’s inauguration by the President, the
committee settled down to business and at the end of their deliberations,
