The mission of NANNM is to promote the health and well-being of all Nigerians including women and infants within their families and communities through the development and support of the profession of nurses and midwifery as practiced by certified nurse-midwives, and certified midwives. Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (N&MCN) was established by Decree No. 89 of 1979, amended by Decree nos. 54 of 1988, 18 of 1989 and 83 of 1992.  The Decree was    promulgated to give council the proper scope and authority to perform its function.   The primary objectives of Council are to ensure the qualitative development of nursing and Midwifery education in Nigeria, maintain high standard of professional practice and enforce discipline within the profession.

Broadly, the functions are related to those of designing, implementing and evaluating various nursing educational programmes of indexing, examination, monitoring standard of nursing practice in the country, registration and licensure of professional nurses.
